Dr. Austin is the theme leader for the Resilient System Design theme in the GSRC. His research efforts in the theme focus on the BulletProof project. The BulletProof project is developing ultra low-cost mechanisms to protect a microprocessor pipeline and on-chip memory system from silicon defects. While traditional defect tolerance techniques require at least 100% overhead due to duplication of resources, the project is exploiting the use of on-line testing and microarchitectural checkpointing to push overheads below 5%.
