Bio:Sorin Iacobovici is a Senior P.E. in Intel Labs. His research focuses on designing reliable computer platforms and on advanced CPU and system architectures. Before joining Intel in Sept.2005 Sorin was a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems. At Sun Sorin first architected the present Panther dual-core SPARC processor then became chief architect of two multi-core multi-threaded SPARC processor chips. He also led the work defining the software interface for multi-core multi-threaded CPUs implemented by all Sun processors. In 2003 Sorin received the Chairman’s Award for his work at Sun. Before Sun Sorin worked at HP where as a lead architect of the SuperDome system he developed the system’s directory-based coherency protocol and mechanisms as well as SuperDome’s interconnect. Sorin also worked at Amdahl first as a RAS Responsible Engineer for the 5990A IBM-compatible mainframe then as lead architect (together with Bob Tomasulo) of the Chaos out-of-order CMOS mainframe. When Amdahl was absorbed into Fujitsu Chaos was used first as the basis for the Millennium line of Fujitsu’s IBM-compatible mainframes then as the basis for Fujitsu’s SPARC64 line of microprocessors.
